Nervous System Regulation with EFT (Tapping)
Our daily lives are filled with various stressors (external and internal) that can take a toll on our mental and emotional wellbeing. However, there's a powerful technique gaining popularity for its ability to alleviate stress and promote emotional balance. Enter: Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), commonly known as Tapping.
What is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?
Emotional Freedom Technique, or Tapping, is a holistic approach that combines ancient Chinese acupressure with modern psychology. It involves gently tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on an issue, emotion, or problem. This simple yet effective practice aims to restore the balance of energy in the body's meridian system.
How Tapping Influences the Nervous System
Nervous system regulation is a key player in anyone’s healing journey. Oftentimes, when multiple chronic conditions are affecting someone and nothing else is improving, nervous system work can actually be the main work that needs to be done to kickstart the healing capabilities.
Scientific Evidence Supporting Tapping
Numerous studies have explored the efficacy of Tapping in stress reduction and emotional regulation. Research suggests that Tapping can lower cortisol levels, improve emotional resilience, and even enhance cognitive function.
Balancing the Autonomic Nervous System
Tapping has been shown to regulate the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary bodily functions. This balance is crucial, affecting everything from heart rate, blood pressure to digestion.
Calming the Amygdala
The amygdala, the processing center for our emotions, is a key player in the brain's stress response. Through Tapping, we can send calming signals to the amygdala, reducing the fight-or-flight response and promoting a sense of calm.
Step-by-Step Guide to Tapping for Nervous System Regulation
Identify the Issue:
Begin by pinpointing the specific issue or emotion you want to address. It could be stress, anxiety, fear, or any other concern.
Set-up Statement
Create a set-up statement that acknowledges the issue while affirming self-acceptance. For example, "Even though I feel (…), I deeply and completely accept myself."
Tapping Sequence
Tap on specific meridian points (top of the head, eyebrow, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone, under the arm, and on the wrist) while repeating key phrases related to the issue.
Reassess and Repeat
After one round, reassess your emotional state. If needed, repeat the process until you feel a sense of relief.
